A few months back, we unveiled the innovative GMAT™ Focus Edition and its transformative implications. With many students (and institutions) preparing for the new test, anticipation has been building. As the transition phase quickly approaches, we dive deeper into how to seamlessly adapt, ensuring you're primed for success. Here's part two of our GMAT Focus Edition guide.

The Countdown: Remember the Key Dates

The Sunset of the Old GMAT

January 31, 2024, marks the retirement of the classic GMAT. If you've been prepping for this version, ensure you're scheduled to take it by this date. After many happy years of standardized testing, we bid the original GMAT farewell!

The Ascension of the Focus Edition

Starting February 1, 2024, the GMAT™ Focus Edition takes the baton. The registration and testing processes have already begun, with exam dates available as early as November 7, 2023. Don't miss out on the opportunity to be among the first cohort of MBA applicants to perform well on the new exam.

Decoding the New GMAT Experience

Efficient, But Not Rushed

With its reduced duration, the Focus Edition might seem fast-paced. Yet, the absence of essays and integrated reasoning tasks allows for a more concentrated approach. In other words, it's streamlined and designed for the modern test-taker. Adapt your preparation to this rhythm.

Flexibility Beyond Section Selection

Previously, we highlighted section-order flexibility. But we should also emphasize the power of the Question Review & Edit feature. Not only can you customize your test-taking journey, but you also have the chance to refine it. Revisit, reassess, and even change up to three answers per section. The ability to review answers will undoubtedly become an important part of the new test-taking strategy.

Insights for Growth

The evolved Official Score Report is less about scores and more about holistic assessment. It provides a window to into your academic abilities and classroom potential. Use it as a personal feedback tool, identifying strengths and developmental areas.

Tweaking Your Test Prep for the Focus Edition

A Shift in Study Materials

While GMAT™ Official Prep remains your trusty guide, remember it's evolved to cater to both GMAT versions. Ensure you're tapping into resources specifically tailored for the Focus Edition. The world of test prep resources is vast and expansive. As you seek out professional support, either from GMAT tutors or GMAT online courses (i.e. Magoosh), make sure you're tapping into resources specifically tailored for the Focus Edition.

Balanced Approach: The Name of the Game

The single cumulative score reiterates the importance of a rounded preparation. Every section matters! Dedicate equal efforts to each section, ensuring consistency in performance.

Real-time Simulation

Practice tests are useful for gauging knowledge and mentally preparing for the stress of a timed test environment. Take advantage of practice tests and hone your new test-taking strategies.

The Authenticity Test: When Your Dream Career Story Might Be Sabotaging Your MBA Application

I had a call this week with Sarah (name changed), one of our M7A clients applying to MIT Sloan. She came to our call with two completely different cover letters written. She felt stuck. Version 1 was bold: "I want to start an allergy therapeutics company, and MIT is where I'll make it happen." Version 2 was strategic: "I want to become an investor-operator in biotech VC, building the foundation to eventually launch something of my own." Both were well-written. Both were compelling. But only one would survive what I call The Authenticity Test.
